Using the SIPOC
The SIPOC sets the boundaries of an improvement project: where the process starts and ends, who the customers are and what they receive. Agree on it with the project sponsor before collecting data. Afterwards, turn the outputs that matter to the customer into measurable characteristics and check them with a capability study, and analyse risks with an FMEA.
Frequently asked questions
›What does SIPOC stand for?
Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, Customers. It is a one-page, high-level map of a process used at the start of a Six Sigma or lean project to agree on the scope.
›How many process steps should a SIPOC have?
Four to seven. A SIPOC is deliberately high level. Detailed steps belong in a process flow chart or a value stream map.
›In what order should I fill it in?
Many teams start with the process steps, then outputs and customers, and finish with inputs and suppliers. This keeps the focus on what the customer receives.
